What Happens at the End of History?
Vaporwave and Karma
If I transform and share this story with you — do you change?
If you transform and share this story with me — do I change?
This morning, I watched a video on vaporwave. I immediately disagreed with the video’s definition of “postmodern.” Then I stopped and just felt my feelings. My emotions welled up, and I opened up Medium to write something about the “end of history.”
Once the rush of feeling subsided, I lost interest in writing.
My impulse did not come from my heart. It had no staying power. In some traditions turning desire into action creates karma. Karma is a debt. All debts, good or bad, must be repaid.
My impulse was for an intellectual experience - to write an article on postmodernism, vaporwave, and the end of history. Instead, I had a transformational experience - I learned about the relationship between emotion and action.
I did write something - this newsletter post. But, this action does not feel karmic; it feels devotional. It expresses a living idea, not a willed idea: a gift, not a debt.
Much Love,
